Marsai Martin is Empowering Young Black Girls & Spreading Positivity with Her New Show 'Saturdays'

Marsai Martin made history as the youngest executive-producer for a major studio film, Little. Now she’s back with a new show highlighting black stories in a way we have not seen before.

Disney Channel has given a series order to Saturdays, a roller-skating comedy from Marsai Martin. Marsai is known for her accomplishments as the winner of multiple NAACP Image Awards and BET Awards for her roles on ABC’s Black-ish and the 2019 film Little.

Saturdays is about a 13-year-old Black girl who’s passionate about roller-skating. She loves the weekends, because that's when she can show off her moves at Saturdays, a roller-rink where she hangs out with her bestfriends, choreograph exclusive routines on her wheels, challenge rivals, and work on becoming a member of Saturdays elite skating team.

Marsai explains how Roller skating is prominent in the Black community as a fun activity, vibe, and aesthetic underrepresented in media. Alongside, she describes how we rarely see beautiful black kids and Black girls as fun and exciting leads. Marsai tells E that the character will also battle sickle cell anemia, an illness that is also big in the Black community yet not highlighted in the media. With Marsai's special twist, the show will still be enjoyable and lighthearted spreading love and positivity.

We love how Marsai is intentional about diverse storytelling. Alongside her diverse storytelling, she’s representing black culture and the stories of underrepresented black girls. Marsai’s goal is to create a narrative that will inspire and empower Black girls, a goal and mission Zoe can stand behind.
